Second Sunday Food Offering

Where can you buy food for 19¢/lb? This Sunday, your contributions to our Second Sunday Food Offering can do just that. Through the end of the year, Lutheran Social Services, which operates the food pantry in Spenard, can purchase shelf-stable food from the Alaska Food Bank at a special rate of $0.19/lb. Last year, JLP’ers contributed $1,700—enough for 9,000 lbs of food! As always, we’re happy to receive contributions of canned fruit or chili, but it’s hard to beat 19¢/lb!

Dennis Rogers presented a check last year $1,700 to Alan from LSSA.

Thanksgiving Update

At the citywide Thanksgiving Blessing distribution on Monday, November 19, JLP folks contributed 321 cans of cranberry sauce, almost a third more than our commitment of 250 cans. Thank you!

The total number served this year was just over 1,200 people. Our volunteers at the Crosspoint distribution site joined nearly 400 people from 30 local churches and secular organizations.

Thanks to everyone who participated by volunteering or bringing food to church. We’re already looking forward to next year!

JLP will hold a service in memory of Bob Poggas at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 29. A time of sharing will follow the service in the fellowship hall. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bob’s life.

Thanksgiving Blessing

THANKSGIVING BLESSING is a community-wide program that gives the neediest families in our neighborhood the dignity of celebrating Thanksgiving with a traditional turkey dinner with all the fixings. Last year, 7,477 families were served across Anchorage.

On Monday, November 19 from 3 pm to 8 pm the food will be distributed at six local centers across town. Our local distribution site is Crosspoint Church, in the Fred Meyer / Burlington shopping center on Dimond Blvd. Last year, over 1,240 families were served at this site alone!

JLP has been asked to help out two ways: cranberry sauce and volunteers:

  • We were asked to provide 250 cans of cranberry sauce. If you’d like to contribute, please bring cans of cranberry relish to the church by Wednesday, November 14, so we can get them to the church on time.
  • JLP was also invited to provide volunteers. If you know you’d like to volunteer, please sign up on the list in the Café. If you’re not sure, ask any of the JLP people who have volunteered in previous years!

UMW “Mission u” Conference

JLP will be the site of the first UMW Mission u Conference this weekend!

Each year, United Methodist Women members prepare for faithful living and action by studying mission studies. Mission studies are offered each year – a geographical, topical, and/or spiritual growth study. These studies motivate, inform, and enrich our commitment to global ministry.

Local leaders are trained to lead one of the three mission studies through the organization’s Mission u program offered around the country. Those leaders, in turn, are able to lead mission studies in their local and conference groups.

This year there are two studies. The spiritual growth track is Embracing Wholeness. The issue study is What About Our Money?: A Faiths Response.

See the UMW Newsletter for information about the event. Registration information is also online.

EXTREME Preaching — September 30

Does something in the Bible give you trouble? Do you know a passage that people struggle with or misquote? Want to find out if that radio preacher got it right? Do you wish Pastor Luke would preach on your favorite passage?

September 30 is the 5th Sunday of the month, and that means it’s time once again for EXTREME Preaching!

Bring your questions about Bible passages with you to worship. We’ll randomly select 2–3 passages, and Pastor Luke will try to preach a mini-sermon on each one. It makes him a better preacher, and you might hear the answer to a question you had about that passage.

Northwood Cleanup – Sept. 23

It’s time for another Northwood Cleanup after fellowship time on September 23. The cleanup is an opportunity for JLP folks to bless our neighborhood by picking up litter from both sides of Northwood Rd. between Strawberry and Raspberry. We adopted this stretch of road as part of Anchorage’s Adopt-a-Road program.

Wear work clothes to worship that morning, and bring a pair of work gloves. Garbage bags will be provided. Plan to spend about an hour. JLP’s members will be picking up garbage along either side of the road that day. Let’s get this done before the snow flies.
